NEC PC 6001 mkII

The PC 6001 mkII was was the second computer on the 6001 line. It was a considerable improvement over the original while keeping compatibility with all 6001 software. Even though the first 6001 was sold in the US this model was only sold in Japan. The system offers five (!) different Basic modes which you selected at start up: N60 BASIC 16Kb RAM, N60 BASIC 32Kb RAM, N60 EXTENDED BASIC 16Kb RAM, N60 EXTENDED BASIC 32Kb RAM and N60 M BASIC 64Kb RAM, each one offering different text and graphic modes with the maximum being 320×200 with 4 colors on the N60 M mode.

The computer is pretty compact (365 x 87 x 260 mm / 3.3 Kg – maybe the smaller computer I own) but it is very well built. The keyboard is great (reminds me a bit of the Apple IIe Platinum’s keyboard) and the case is solid. The NEC basic is very powerful even though documentation about it is scarce. Games are available but have to be imported from Japan (I am trying to figure out a way to connect the computer directly to the PC speaker and play cas files).

The mkII was available in two color cases: silver like mine and ivory. It has a monochrome composite output (not very common in Japanese computers of that time) but it also has the usual RGB that uses the same cable as the FM-7 and PC-8001 mkII.

This is a very rare computer here in the US so I was glad to find it. A great addition to my collection.
